Since the fire that destroyed the Parliament building in Majuro on August 26, 2025, the RMI Government declared a 90-Day State of Emergency. The declaration made by Acting President Kalani Kaneko, on August 29th, allows the government to pool all funds and resources and to request funds from donor partners. On September 17, the U.S. State Department said Washington will provide US$13 million in funding to rebuild the Nitijela parliament building “in conjunction with support from Taiwan”. Taiwan previously pledged more than $30 million to the Marshall Islands for the construction of a new capital building, a project that was underway before the fire. The Marshall Islands is one of a dozen countries that have full diplomatic ties with Taiwan. See TaiwanPlus News report.
