Much had taken place on Ebeye on Kwajalein Atoll the first week of February building to the celebration of the 81st Kwajalein Kamolol Day. President Hilda Heine and diplomatic partners from Taiwan, Australia, Japan and the US traveled to Ebeye for the event’s opening ceremony. In the weeklong event, diplomatic partner Japan Ambassador to Marshall Islands Soma Hirohisa met with Kwajalein Atoll Local Government Mayor Hirata Kabua and the local leadership on potential development for the Ebeye and Kwajalein community. Japan had donated grassroots projects and heavy equipment to Ebeye in the past years. Other Emissaries held separate engagements with Mayor Hirata and Paramount Chief Mike Kabua throughout the week.
Daily life on Ebeye is reflected in some of the images. The Ebeye road is mostly empty in the afternoon hours of the day as traffic often takes place when the local workforce return from the Kwajalein military base in the morning hours and late evenings. As seen in these photos, free drinking water is accessible to the general public at any hours of the day. The water distribution center runs 24/7 with a reverse osmosis machine that produces quality drinking water. Kids and pedestrians often flood the streets when traffic is slow. The Lae leadership with its Minister Thomas Maddison and Mayor Telmong Kabua received a 40-foot boat from Mayor Hirata Kabua and the Kwajalein local government as part of the week’s activities. The boat previously serviced the Kwajalein population from Ebeye to the smaller islets within the Kwajalein Lagoon. The boat is expected to voyage to Majuro for minor repairs before making its way to Lae Atoll.
