Most of our traveling difficulties can be alleviated with a real REAL ID card in our possession… especially, if you were a real globetrotter. For instance, it can speed up your wait in line at the airport. And it can even made traveling smooth from airport to airport.
According to a press release from the Federated States of Micronesia embassy in Washington D.C., the deadline is on the 7th of May.
“The FSM Embassy in D.C. wishes to inform all FSM citizens residing in the United States and its territories, that the REAL ID Act of 2005 will take full effect on May 7, 2025,” the press release stated. “We urge all of our citizens to apply for a REAL-ID before the given deadline to avoid travel disruptions, and any related inconveniences.”
How and why did we started going to the REAL ID as the identification for travel in the first place?
One word: Terrorists
At the turn of the century, terrorists’ activities was on the rise against the United States, and in general. The Oklahoma city incident kicked off all activities.
“The Oklahoma City bombing was a domestic terrorist truck bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, United States, on April 19, 1995,” stated Wikipedia.
It was coming close to the end of the 20th century when Oklahoma happened. Wiki said it was one of the deadliest attacks in history. Of course, we now know about the horrific terrorist bombing of 9/11. We had that one edged into our minds because we played it and replayed it on our TV… as it was one caught on camera… Live!…at the time.
According to the history website, https://www.history.com/articles/9-11-attacks#World-Trade-Center, where things were still played out, frozen in time:
“On September 11, 2001, terrorists linked to the Islamic extremist group al Qaeda—founded by Osama bin Laden—hijacked four commercial passenger airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the World Trade Center in New York City. Within a few hours, both of the twin towers collapsed into rubble, demolishing a large section of lower Manhattan. A third plane hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. The passengers and crew of the fourth plane fought back, and the plane was downed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
“Almost 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, including the 19 al Qaeda terrorists. The shocking events of September 11 were televised globally and left much of the world reeling in horror. The administration of President George W. Bush responded by declaring a “war on terrorism,” including the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the invasion of Afghanistan.
World Trade Center
“At 8:45 a.m. on a clear Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
“The impact left a gaping, burning hole near the 93rd and 99th floors of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more on higher floors.
“As the evacuation of the tower and its twin got underway, television cameras broadcasted live images of what initially appeared to be a freak accident. Then, 18 minutes after the first plane hit, a second Boeing 767—United Airlines Flight 175—appeared in the sky, sharply turned toward the World Trade Center, and sliced into the south tower between the 77th and 85th floors.
“The collision caused a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and onto the streets below. It immediately became clear that America was under attack.”
According to an article at the U.S. Government Accounting Office, ‘The Rising Threat of Domestic Terrorism in the U.S. and Federal Efforts to Combat It’, posted on March 02, 2023: “Domestic terrorism is on the rise. Several attacks have been widely reported in the last few years.”
The U.S. has been battling terrorists ever since they’ve rained terror on its shores, and the whole world. So, the U.S. is taking precautionary and preventive measures by implementing the real ID. But the new administration of Donald Trump and JD Vance has almost blurred the line. However, the blame has shifted somewhere else.
“President Trump has said the federal government would designate antifa as a ‘terrorist organization’ and has blamed it for violence at protests against racial injustice and police brutality,” an article stated, https://www.mprnews.org/story/2020/09/23/trump-social-media-rightwing-news-stir-up-antifa-scares.
“Donald Trump, Stochastic Terrorist” is an article by David Corn, posted on May 1, 2024; in it he accused Trump of being a terrorist.
“As Donald Trump has faced multiple criminal indictments, he and/or his minions have viciously assailed prosecutors, judges (and their families), and even jurors, and these expressions of vitriol place a target on the back of each of these people. Those attacks could be considered acts of stochastic terrorism. What’s stochastic terrorism?
“Stochastic terrorism is defined by conflict and law enforcement experts as the demonization of a foe so that he, she, or they might become targets of violence. Scientific American recently put it this way:
“Dehumanizing and vilifying a person or group of people can provoke what scholars and law enforcement officials call stochastic terrorism, in which ideologically driven hate speech increases the likelihood that people will violently and unpredictably attack the targets of vicious claims. At its core, stochastic terrorism exploits one of our strongest and most complicated emotions: disgust.
“In addition to disgust, fear and hatred can work, the point being to depict a person or set of people as a loathsome other undeserving of respect of acceptance, and a dangerous threat.”
And so it was, September 11 began of the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, and thus REAL ID.
“The official purposes covered by the Act and regulation are:
●Accessing certain federal facilities;
●Boarding Federally regulated commercial aircraft; and
●Entering nuclear power plants.
We may not be in demand to enter a nuclear power plant today (maybe someday), but we have veterans who may need access to the bases.
And, certainly, we all are still free to travel back home and back to the U.S. Thus, the real ID can be a handy piece of work, it is a real must have.
Just don’t forget the deadline… May 7, 2025.
