Update: MV Meram Crew is finally home

Good news! The Meram crew is finally home. ❤️

At the beginning of this month, the MV Meram caught fire while traveling between Namu and Ebeye, forcing the crew to abandon ship and spend hours adrift at sea before being rescued. Chikin Melele first reported the fire, and the Marshall Islands Journal later confirmed that the blaze was confined to the cabin and wheelhouse, the vessel’s engines were not damaged, and the Meram is expected to be repaired and returned to service.

While the vessel’s future was reassuring, concern quickly shifted to the crew, who remained stranded on Ebeye because no Air Marshall Islands seats were available. Family members raised concerns about the delay in bringing the men home. In a post shared on Kewan Jela and later quoted by the Marshall Islands Journal, Jemina Edison Kilma wrote, “They survived a tragedy that could have easily claimed their lives. They deserve more than words of appreciation. They deserve action. They deserve dignity.” She shared that the crew had been sleeping in a classroom at Queen of Peace School and that MEC had provided $250 to cover food for the entire crew for the week, calling for more to be done to reunite them with their families in Majuro.

Today, Jemina shared the welcome news that the crew has safely returned home. She expressed gratitude to God for His protection and thanked MEC for chartering an Air Marshall Islands flight, along with Air Marshall Islands, MIMRA, National Disaster, the Ebeye community, and the many family members, friends, and volunteers who provided meals, clothing, transportation, prayers, and other support during the crew’s unexpected stay.

We are grateful to see this difficult chapter come to a close and the Meram crew reunited with their loved ones. Kommol tata to everyone who helped make it possible.
