West Wind Swell Warnings / Naan in kakkōl kōn West Wind Swell

The local RTS Weather Station has re-issued a West Wind Swell Warning for Kwajalein and Roi-Namur for the week starting September 28. The warning follows another burst of westerly winds associated with the monsoon trough. NWS Guam also reports that the trough remains an important weather feature across Micronesia, with the Marshall Islands near its southern edge. (Audio in Marshallese)

RTS is also watching a developing low-level circulation near Kwajalein that could bring another period of westerly winds to the atoll. The circulation is expected to develop along the monsoon trough north or northwest of Kwajalein, with west-southwest to west-northwest winds increasing October 1. RTS says a West Wind Swell Warning may be reissued as the westerly flow strengthens. The exact position and strength of the developing circulation remain uncertain, but westerly winds could continue into the weekend.

NWS Guam has issued a Special Weather Statement for Chuuk, Yap, and Palau because its monsoon surge is expected to produce deteriorating wind, sea, and surf conditions. Significant tropical-cyclone development is expected within 24 hours, though the system is well west of the RMI and is influencing the Marshalls mainly through the broader monsoon pattern rather than a direct cyclone impact.

For now, NWS Guam has no broader warning or advisory in effect for the Marshall Islands, and its latest regional forecast describes seas around 3–5 feet with generally light winds.  People traveling by boat or spending time along lagoon-facing shorelines should continue to watch local conditions and updates from RTS and the National Weather Service.

We are also continuing to see the impact of the 2026 El Niño season. The exposed coral being reported in Yap and the RMI is consistent with one of its known effects: temporarily lower sea levels in the western Pacific.
