According to an immigrant rights advocate for New Frontiers, families whose loved ones have been detained “shared that they had no criminal records.”
The enforcement has disrupted daily life beyond those detained. In Liberal, National Beef changed start times for workers. In Dodge City, the public schools asked families to update emergency contacts and identify who could pick up their children if a parent could not. In Liberal, Vice Mayor said 120 students were absent from Meadowlark Elementary School on Wednesday. Local reporting also describes businesses closing, workers missing shifts, and families afraid to leave home.
Residents and local officials have also raised concerns about the driving of federal agents’. The Vice Mayor in Liberal said she saw an ICE vehicle make a sudden U-turn to pursue another car.
Update (25 September 2026): Dodge City officials say the ICE operation in their city has ended and agents are expected to leave the area. The city still has questions about what happened and says it is seeking greater coordination and transparency from federal authorities. Officials have not released a confirmed detention count.
The announcement concerns Dodge City; it does not establish whether operations have ended in Liberal or Holcomb. Chikin Melele has not received any information to lead us to believe that any Marshallese or other COFA citizens in Kansas were detained.
